Build a Local WordPress Site Before Going Live

By George Nicolaou

A local WordPress environment lets you build and experiment on your own computer. That is useful for learning, preparing a starter site and testing changes before they reach visitors.

Set up a useful test

Create the site in your local development tool, choose compatible software versions and install the theme and plugins you plan to use. If you copy a live site, remove personal data you do not need and keep the copy private.

Know what local testing cannot prove

A local site does not automatically reproduce the host’s caching, network conditions, email delivery or server configuration. A form that works locally still needs a delivery test on staging. Payment callbacks and external integrations may also require an accessible test URL.

Move changes carefully

  1. Keep a record of the files, layouts and settings you changed.
  2. Back up the destination before importing or deploying.
  3. Do not overwrite newer orders, comments or enquiries with an older local database.
  4. Test important journeys on staging and again after launch.

This recording uses the product branding and interface available at the time. Treat it as a development workflow example and check the current tool’s documentation for installation and migration details.
