Open a WordPress Menu Link in a New Tab
By George Nicolaou
A menu link can open in a new tab, but that should be an intentional choice. Internal navigation normally works best in the current tab so visitors retain a predictable back-button history.
Find the menu-item option
In the WordPress menu editor, open the item’s settings. If the link-target option is hidden, check the editor’s available display options. A menu managed inside a builder may expose the setting in its own module instead.
Use new tabs selectively
A separate tab may suit a supporting external resource that readers need beside your page. Avoid making every link open another tab. Where the behaviour could surprise readers, indicate it in the link wording.
Test the real menu
Save the menu and check the destination on the published website, including the mobile dropdown. Confirm that you changed the assigned menu rather than a similarly named unused menu. Modern browsers and platforms handle external-link protections differently, so inspect the final link when adapting an older custom implementation.
