Divi Theme vs Divi Builder Plugin: Which Do You Need?

By George Nicolaou

The Divi theme and the Divi Builder plugin are related, but they solve different starting problems. The theme supplies the site’s theme layer as well as the builder. The plugin lets you use Divi’s page-building tools while keeping another WordPress theme.

Start with the website you already have

If you are building a new Divi-based site, the theme can give you one consistent place to manage the design. If your current theme provides functionality or layouts you need to retain, changing themes solely to get a visual editor may be unnecessary.

Check templates, not just the homepage

Review the header, footer, blog archive, individual posts and shop pages. A page builder’s content sits within a wider theme and template system. Confirm how each area will be edited and whether existing styling conflicts with the builder.

Plan the migration

  1. Make a backup and work on a staging copy.
  2. List shortcodes, widgets and custom code that rely on the old theme.
  3. Build one representative page and test mobile navigation, forms and performance.
  4. Move the remaining pages only after that test works.

This video explains the distinction in the version available when recorded. For a current project, check compatibility and licences directly with the vendors and avoid assuming that every older add-on works with a newer builder release.
