Website Hosting Types Explained: Shared, VPS and Managed

By George Nicolaou

Hosting labels tell only part of the story. The important questions are what resources your website receives and who maintains the server and application.

Shared hosting

Several websites share a server. This can suit a small site, but resource limits and support quality matter. Check backup retention, restore options and what happens when your site exceeds its allocation.

VPS or dedicated resources

A virtual server gives you a more defined environment; a dedicated server gives you the machine itself. More control also brings more responsibility unless the provider manages it for you. Someone still needs to handle security, updates, monitoring and recovery.

Managed WordPress hosting

Managed services may handle some WordPress-specific tasks, but the word “managed” is not a complete specification. Ask exactly which updates, backups, staging tools and incident response are included. You remain responsible for your content, accounts and business processes.

Compare using your actual needs

Write down expected traffic, storage, integrations and support requirements. An online shop needs different recovery and performance checks from a small brochure site. Choose on those requirements rather than the longest feature list.
