Managed Hosting Security: What to Ask Your Provider
By George Nicolaou
Managed hosting can reduce routine administration, but it does not remove every security responsibility. The useful comparison is the provider’s actual service scope.
Ask about prevention and recovery
- Which server and application updates are included, and how are compatibility problems handled?
- Are backups stored separately, how long are they retained, and who can restore them?
- What happens when malware or suspicious activity is detected?
- Is staging available so changes can be tested before publication?
Keep control of your own accounts
Use individual accounts and appropriate permissions. Protect administrator and hosting logins, remove access when it is no longer needed, and keep domain ownership and billing details with the business. A host cannot prevent every mistake made through an authorised account.
Check the handover
Agree who updates plugins, checks forms and monitors failures. “The host handles it” is too vague if neither the provider nor your developer checks whether the shop still takes orders after an update.
